Its first session was on “The World’s Religious System and Democracy: Crafting the ‘Twin Tolerations’, while the second was on “An ‘Arab’ More than ‘Moslem’ Electoral Gap”. Participated in the discussion were Indonesian public intellectuals and journalists. |

A delegation of Australian Muslim community leaders visited Jakarta and West Java from October 28 to November 2, following a five-day visit to Malaysia. The delegation is made up of Dr. Ameer Ali of West Australia, Sheik Shafiq Khan, Dr. Amin Hady, Jamila Hussain and Tom Zreika of New South Wales, Sheik Sabri Samson of Tasmania, Faiza El-Higzi of Queensland, and Ikebal Patel of Canberra. |

CDCC organized a public lecture by Ismail K. Poonawala (Professor of Arabic, University of California, Los Angeles [UCLA]) on “Islamic Studies in the West: Its Relevance to Dialogue between Islam and the West” on September 27, 2007 (the midst of Ramadan) in Jakarta. Opened by one of his disciples at UCLA, who is now also the chairman of CDCC, Prof. M. Din Syamsuddin, the lecture was attended by some public intellectuals such as Prof. Atho Mudzhar, Dr. Syafii Anwar, Dr. Amin Nurdin, and Yayah Khisbiyah. |

Discussing Indonesia-Malaysia Relations |

In response to the latest development of Indonesia-Malaysia relations, CDCC organized a roundtable discussion on “Menimbang Hubungan Indonesia—Malaysia” (Reconsidering Indonesia—Malaysia Relations) on Thursday, September 6, 2007 at CDCC office. Opened by one of the founders of CDCC, Prof. Dr. Didik J. Rachbini, the discussion was very lively. The speakers of this discussion were Yuri Thamrin, the Director for Asia-Pacific of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Djoko Susilo, a member of Commision I of the Indonesian House of Representatives. Speaking more as an academic, Mr. Thamrin suggested that Indonesia-Malaysia relations have recently been in “stable tension”. |
